In recent times Celiac Disease has become a social issue because the celiac requires a special diet and needs special foods.
Celiac Disease has been described from the first century A.D. by the Latin doctor Celso, introducing the term “celiac” to indicate a diarrheal disease derived from the greek “koiliakos”, meaning “those who suffer from their intestines.” In 1887 the English pediatrician Samuel Gee described celiac disease for the first time in the modern era. He was the first to theorise the importance of the diet for celiac disease control.
Celiac disease has a genetic basis, however acute stressful events that occurred in a person’s life may favour its onset: surgery, pregnancy, artificial feeding, early weaning, poor diets, etc. People with celiac disease tend to develop autoimmune diseases aggravating greatly their clinical picture.
According to Ayurveda, malabsorption present in people suffering Celiac disease occurs due to the presence of “toxins” (partially digested substances) caused by the malfunctioning of the System “Agni” (Fire Digestive System). The “toxins” are not only present in the intestinal apparatus, but in all tissues and the individual cells that clog the Srotas (physical and energetic channels) present in an individual. The physical Srotas consist of the gastro-enteric tube, lymphatic channels, of the arteries, veins, capillaries, etc., which lose their proper transporting functionality, because of the “blocking”. In Ayurveda Celiac Disease can be categorised among the diseases derived from digestive insufficiency (Agnimandya).
Celiac disease, however, also involves the immune system and the intestine is an important site for the activation and functioning of the immune system. So a good condition of the intestinal flora would help to maintain its proper function. Therefore we advise keeping open the channels using Ayurvedic preparations like Amavata Virya® and in adults, also Kancha Virya®. An efficient immune system prevents the onset of other complications, so it is important to eliminate toxins with Hara Virya® and Virechan Virya® to prevent their reabsorption and the activation of a vicious cycle.
A correct diet with a good Digestive Fire is the foundation of all Ayurvedic discipline. In this case, we recommend eating or cooking the specific foods with herbs and spices (except chillipepper ) to make them bio-available (Appeto Virya®, Trikatu Virya® are mixtures of ready aromatic herbs).
